Birch oil is extracted using the process of steam distillation from Betula lenta (which is also known as B. odorata, B. alba var. pubescens, pendula or verrucosa), of the Betulaceae family and is also known as silver birch or European white birch. The leaf buds of this tree are used in its extraction process. This tree is often used for decorative purposes and it is native to the northern hemisphere. This tree is capable of growing up to the height of 15-20 meters. The branches of this tree are slender in nature and its bark is silver- white in color, while the oval leaves are light green in color. Sometime back, the buds of this plant were used as a tonic in a few hair treatments. In Scandinavia, fresh and young twigs and leaflets of birch are wrapped up as a bundle then they are used in saunas treatments, which help in the toning process of the skin and it further enhances circulation.
